Women’s Health Connecticut is proud to announce that Mark S. DeFrancesco, MD, has been named the 66th president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). He has also been appointed the president of its companion organization, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Women’s Health Connecticut is proud to announce that Mark S. DeFrancesco, MD, has been named the 66th president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). He has also been appointed the president of its companion organization, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Based in Washington, D.C., ACOG is the nation’s leading group of physicians providing health care for women, boasting more than 58,000 members.
Dr. DeFrancesco is the managing partner of Westwood Women’s Health in Waterbury, CT, a Women’s Health Connecticut division. He is a founding member of Women’s Health Connecticut, and served as its chief medical officer for several years. After graduating from Yale University, Dr. DeFrancesco earned his medical degree from the University of Connecticut, and currently serves as an assistant clinical professor in UConn’s Department of Ob-Gyn. He later received his master’s in business administration from the University of New Haven.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. DeFrancesco has been a frequent advocate for the health of the women he serves. Over the years, he has held many ACOG positions at the local, regional, and national levels. Dr. DeFrancesco is a board member and a past president of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, and is a past president of the New England Obstetrical and Gynecological Society. He has also been a longtime member of the Connecticut State Medical Society, serving on the legislative committee for many years, and is a past president of the Connecticut Society of American Board Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. DeFrancesco was awarded the Patients’ Choice Award and was named one of America’s Top Obstetricians and Gynecologists. In 2009, he was inducted as an honorary member of SOCHOG, the Chilean Obstetrics and Gynecology Society.
Prior to his medical career, Dr. DeFrancesco served as a State Representative in the Connecticut Legislature.
Dr. DeFrancesco was sworn in during the presidential inauguration and convocation at the ACOG Annual Clinical and Scientific Meeting, the nation’s largest meeting of Ob-Gyns in the U.S. and premiere medical conference focused solely on women’s health. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of providing comprehensive, prevention-oriented care for prenatal and maternal health, focusing on the dangers of obesity and smoking.
