Cold Medications — Decongestants, Expectorants and Cough Suppressants

Women who already have borderline or slightly elevated blood pressure should consult their provider.  Some of cold medications can cause vasoconstriction of blood vessels and elevated blood pressure which may impair the blood flow to the fetus, and can affect the health and growth of the baby.

Safe for use:
  • Guafensin (Mucinex®, Robitussin®)
  • Dextromethorphan  (Robitussin® DM, Vicks® Formula 44®)
  • Cough Drops
  • Vicks® VapoRub®
Do Not Use:
  • Pseudoephedrine, phenylepherine (Sudafed®)
  • Cough and Cold medicines containing alcohol

Contact your health care provider if symptoms of a cold of flu persist for more than 3-7 days of if accompanied by a fever of 101.4ºF or higher.
